James H. Burgess, Jr. was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1954.  Jim is a principal and co-founder of the firm.  He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1979 and has practiced since then primarily in the areas of commercial litigation, insurance defense and personal injury litigation.  He received his B.S. in 1976 from Indiana University and his J.D. in 1979 from Florida State University.  In addition to all Florida state courts, Jim is admitted to the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court.  Jim clerked for the Honorable Gene E. Brooks, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana prior to coming to Florida.  Jim was a principal in the law firm of Syprett, Meshad, Resnick & Lieb, P.A. prior to co-founding this firm.  He is past president of the Sarasota County Bar Association and a member of the American, Florida, and Sarasota County Bar Associations and the Florida Trial Lawyers Association.  He is also a Board Certified Civil Trial Attorney, and a Certified Court Arbitrator.
