Jim Burgess has over 40 years of experience practicing law. His practice focuses primarily on complex business and commercial litigation, personal injury, wrongful death, and insurance defense litigation. He is a Board-Certified Civil Trial Attorney, and a Certified Court Arbitrator.
Jim was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1954. He received a B.S. in marketing and advertising in1976 from Indiana University, and his J.D. in 1979 from Florida State University. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1979. He is admitted to practice before all Florida Courts, the United States District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. Jim is a past president of the Sarasota County Bar Association as well as a past president of the Young Lawyers Section, as well as a member of the American Bar Association and the Florida Trial Lawyers Association. Jim is also a founding member and past president of the local chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates. Jim was appointed by the Governor of the State of Florida to the Judicial Nominating Committee for the Twelfth Judicial Circuit. He is a member of the Florida and Sarasota County Bar Associations.
Jim has been active in the community serving as a Board member of the YMCA, and a Board member and President of the Sarasota United Soccer League, and coaching and refereeing boys soccer. Jim is a principal and co-founder of the firm.
